on the fourth of november, a warm southern breeze
pushed the temperature up above sixty degrees
and the leaves red and gold drifted down from the trees
and saw history as they fell
for we'd left home our overcoats left home our gloves
headed down to the park for some peace, hope and love
while the news helicopters all circled above
it was the night we won the war
by the tens of the thousands, we poured through the gates
stood elbow to elbow to wait out the wait
put our kids on our shoulders and kept them up late
and what a story they'd have to tell
and we cheered as the jumbotron tracked our success
from virginia to michigan east to the west
when ohio came in, our hearts burst in our chests
on the night we won the war
and oh, california u know we were all of us counting on u
and oh, we were all pulling for u
and then u came thru
reliably blue
and we gave out a great shout that rose to the skies
and we all hugged the strangers that stood at our sides
and even chicago cops wiped the tears from their eyes
on the night we won the war
......
and then finally the man of the hour appeared
and he stepped to the microphone, asked for our ears
and all the stars in the sky, they stood still just to hear
and the whole world was listening as well
for the words that came from the new president's mouth
said let this be the start of an end to the fight
'tween the us and the them and the north and the south
'tween the north and the south and the black and the white
the american flag was a beautiful sight
on the night we finally won the war
